McDonald’s Bowness, Calgary

McDonald's fish burger

Sometimes I really crave a fish burger and that means that I check out McDonald’s once in a while. And yesterday it was one of those days that i wanted a Fish burger.

At around 7 PM I walked in to the McDonald’s next to Highway 1 close to the Canada Olympic Park first of all this McDonald’s location has lots of parking and looks real nice on the inside (they even have a fireplace). The thing that was more surprising was that there where only 3 customers (including me) in this McDonald’s restaurant. I was expecting more people specially because lots of people eat dinner around this time.

I ordered 2 Filet-O-Fish sandwiches and payed by MasterCard and till my surprise I didn’t have to sign for anything. Then there was a small wait while they prepared my sandwich, I could follow the production process and was surprised that my fish was coming out of a drawer I was expecting a fryer but apparently they prebake them and keep them warm.

OK so I left McDonald’s for home and there i got the following surprise:

McDonald's Filet-O-Fish sandwich with half a slice of cheese

It looks like that McDonald’s is saving money by putting half slices of cheese on there Filet-O-Fish Sandwich. First I expected that i would be only one of the two Sandwiches but NO both my Filet-O-Fish Sandwiches had only a half a slice of cheese and i am pretty sure that in the past i always got complete slices.

For me it doesn’t really make a difference because i don’t really care for the processed cheese. Besides the cheese the burger was not fresh i guess it was sitting in that drawer for a while the Fish fillet was dry so dry that you could still notice even though there was a lot of sauce on the burger.

And this makes me come to the conclusion that this was probably the worst Fish-O-Filet Sandwich I ever got.

Shakespeare in the park, Calgary

This year for the 20th time there is Shakespeare in the Park. until August 25th you can see a Shakespeare performance everyday (except Sunday) at Prince’s Island Park.

On a nice summer day what is nicer then enjoy the outdoors so a visit to Shakespeare in the park is a nice thing you could do in Calgary. Entrance is Free and all performances start at 7 PM.

For this year they performer “Macbeth” and “As you like it” and that means that there are two changes to see some Shakespeare in the park.

The performance are at a stage in Prince’s Island Park and you can sit on the grass to enjoy the play. The Performance doesn’t have any microphones and stuff so that makes it some times difficult to understand the auteurs specially if there are also some kids screaming.

So my advice to you is if you go make sure your are on time and look for a nice spot in front so that you can hear everything.

Shakespeare in the Park is definitely a nice way to spend and evening out and Prince’s Island Park is a great venue for a performance like this.

Check out their WEBSITE for more info about the play

Molly Malone’s Irish Pub, Calgary

It was a nice day yesterday so we decided to give Molly Malone’s in Kensington a try. They have a nice roof terras so on a beautiful day like yesterday it was a nice way to enjoy the weather.

The roof teras is really nice it is out of the wind and has lots of shade so not to much worries of sunburn. On the roof they have their own bar and washrooms and to get back to the last one i would say stay out of the guy’s bathroom because it is to filthy to enter, it stinks and doesn’t looked to be cleaned for a LONG time.

I ordered the fish and chips and a diet coke. The diet coke tasted like nothing so that one went back and i got a normal coke instead and that tasted a bit better but still below average. The food was OK, the fish had way to much batter and was not crispy but still the taste was OK but it doesn’t even come close to the fish and chips i ate at Joey’s only seafood restaurant.

The service was also just OK the waitress was not really that interested in us and was kinda clumsy.

My Conclusion:

I would revisited Molly Malone’s but mainly because i like the outside teras the food is OK but nothing special. So after this i can’t really recommend this Irish Pub in Calgary but still there is worse out there!

Cora’s, 130 Avenue SE, Calgary

Cor's Restaurant in Calgary

Last Saturday we brought a visit to Cora’s to celebrate a friends birthday. There is only 1 Cora’s in Alberta so the lines where crazy.

Cora’s is Breakfast / Lunch Restaurant and it closes at 3 PM so make sure you are in time. So what can you expect at Cora’s? Of course the typical breakfast things like Eggs, French Toast, Crepes, waffles and lots of fresh fruits.

The ambiance at Cora’s is nice everything looks fresh and has lots of color. Walls are all painted and have food items on it so that makes it all a nice and friendly place.

I ordered French Toast with fresh fruits and i have to say the toast where a bit harder then i am used to but still they tasted good. And they came topped with all kinds of fresh fruits to make it complete.

My Conclusion:

Cora’s here in Calgary is nice but if you want to get in make sure to be on time because there will be a BIG line of people trying to get in. And it is worth it here you will not get the usual processed foods but real fresh made food and it will be lots of it to.

So if you like a nice breakfast check out this or maybe another Cora’s any where in the country.

Milestone’s Restaurant, 8th Avenue Se Calgary

Milestone's Restaurant, grill & Bar at stephens avenue in Calgary

With some friends from out of town we brought a visit to Milstone’s at Stephen Avenue in Calgary. Milestone’s is a chain with restaurants in Alberta, British Columbia and Ontario. The atmosphere is a little bit more classy then the average chain restaurant.

On our visit the weather was great so we decided not to use our reserved table inside but to enjoy the terras (like most people). This Milestone’s is situated next to the Telus Convention Centre and across the street from a hotel and of course on Stephen Avenue so that makes sitting outside even better because there is always something happening when you are enjoying your meal.

Milstone’s Restaurant offers a good range of different dishes so that there is always something you would like. Me of course went for a burger :) and this burger was very fresh and not processed at all so that made it a great meal.

My conclusion:

This Milestone’s Restaurant (the first one I visited) was worth a visit and will be on my list of restaurants i would like to visit again. The ambulants is nice and classy but not to much. The staff is correct and friendly but seem to be busy as well.

So if you would like a meal in Down Town Calgary i would think of this Milestones Restaurant!

Sportchek, Market Mall Calgary

Sportcheck store marketmall calgary alberta

You probably know by now that if I write a review I found something negative to say but let me be positive today.

So I started to play a bit of squash and till now I used a real old racket that my wife got from someone YEARS ago so it was time for me to start looking for something better. On Saturday we visited a SportChek store in the south of Calgary and i saw a nice Dunlop racket there but i decided to look around a bit because i thought it didn’t come with a protective cover.

So back at home i was still impressed with this nice Dunlop Racket that was only like 50 dollars so we decided to look at a different sportcheck on Sunday just before we would go play Squash to see if they had one with a cover. The SportChek we went to was the one in Market Mall and this Sportchek is a lot bigger then the store we visited on Saterday. They had a lot of racket but non in the price range i saw the day before. And i saw a nice Dunlop Squash Racket that looked like the one from the day before but now it was only 99 dollars almost double then the one the day before.

So i decided to ask one of the SportChek people about it. The SportCheck employee was very helpful and try to figure out what the right price should be. He called a couple of stores including the one we thought i visited the day before but nobody could give him a clear answer. By this time i found out that he was one of the store mangers and he decided to price match me the racket any ways. Then he checked if it came with a cover and apparently it didn’t but still he gave me a great Dunlop cover for the Racket.

And today when doing a bit of research for this review i found out that the racket i saw on saturday is in fact a different racket that costs 50 dollars (on the SportChek website) and this means that i got a great deal and great service.

My conclusion is that if you need sport equipment from one of the big stores then check out the SportChek in Market Mall there the staff is still interested in the customers and willing to help you with all your questions.

The Simpsons Movie

If you like the TV show you will like the movie. We were not expecting much, usually when they make movies of Tv shows, the movies suck or are not very different from the TV show (X-files is a good example of this). However I must say I was pleasantly surprised, it was not the greatest movie and I wasnt blown away.. however there was enough there for it to be different from the TV show and funny at a whole new level.

Besides the fact that we finally got to see bart’s weenie.. and met spider pig! :-) I highly recommend you see this movie.. although perhaps wait for it to come on video

Apparently if you look hard enough in the crowd.. you will see a certain “dictator” as well.. I guess I missed him!

2 4 1 pizza in Calgary

I used to always love the 241 pizza in ThunderBay, on many occasions we ordered our girls night out pizza from there, it was delicious and the price was always right. I recently decided to try the one here in Calgary across from the Canada Olymic Park. The place is shared by a Robbins donuts. Once we were inside, we realized right away that maybe we were going to be dissapointed. The place was generally dirty, and falling apart, the furniture was ripped and the freezers and counters had stains and smudges all over. There was even a large fly sitting inside the warm display cupboard on top of a bran muffin.

There were no pizza slices on display, even though the sign said they had slices, the pizza’s were not 2 for 1, as the chain previously boasted, and they were out of pineapple, although it was one of the offered toppings on the list. Anyways, we decided to get a pepperoni pizza. Our pizza was ready in 20 min which was nice, it was very small though (roughly 8-9 inches in diameter). Once we brought it home ( about a 10 min ride), the pizza felt cold, upon biting into it, we realized that the bottom layer of cheese was still cold, and the tomato sauce was cold as well… very strange… I had to heat my slices up in the microwave and add hot sauce on it to give it some kind of taste. The crust had the texture of bread and not pizza dough.

All in all, it was a very dissapointing and expensive experience (10$). I wouldnt recommend you go there unless you are very very desperate for food and every food place on the way is closed.

USBCell AA Batteries

Charge your batteries through your usb port

I am the proud owner of a set of USBCell AA batteries and i put them through the test the last couple of weeks.

The nice thing about the USBCell Batteries is that you can charge them through your USB port of your computer or with a regular battery charger.

So now you don’t have to run out of power any more. When you charge the USBCell AA’s though your USB port you will see a light that tells you how the charging is going.

It takes a while for the batteries to charge through your USB port, in my case it took a little over 5 hours and they get real HOT. But you can just charge the USBCell batteries in your normal charger and keep the USB port for backup use.

These AA batteries are 1300mA and that is enough for lots of use but it is also limited i would not use them in things like Digital Camera’s. I use them around the house in different objects like my Wii Mote and my Wireless mouse and they perform as good as any battery.

So if you want to be a bit cooler then your friends then have a look at this great product. You can order them (pack of two) for 20 dollars at ThinkGeek.

Tera Gear Camping Mat

I was looking for a cheap little camping mattress and found a Tera Gear camping mat at our local Super Store it was priced just over 6 dollars so you can’t expect to much of that.

But back to the Camping mat. This mat is light blue and made of a light foam that is 0.6cm thick. The dimensions are 183 cm by 48 cm and that makes it a bit small to use it as a camping mattress. The thickness is ok but don’t try to sleep on a rocky surface because you will feel it.

For an adult the 48 cm is just to narrow to sleep on. 183cm length is ok but also there you could have your feet stick out a bit.

The mattress is easy to roll up and comes with two black straps (connected) to keep it in a nice role.

My conclusion is that it is a nice little mat but not really as a camping mattress but more for small tasks like we use it for stretching after running in the park.

If you are looking for something like this the have a look at one of the Loblaws stores or stores that are related like Supersore or save on foods.
