After experimenting with various lengths of straw, our product design team made the straws short enough to allow for optimum suction. I have passed along your observation, though. The bottles come in a variety of sizes and colors and the smaller ones may work better for your cupholders. The Honda Pilot cupholder, for example, fits the .5L size like a glove.
