Calgary Jubilee Auditorium got a visit from the dance show Divine Performing Arts Chinese Spectacular a show that tells you all kind of Chinese stories in the form of dance of vocals.
The Jubilee Auditorium was a almost full house when we went to see the Chinese Spectacular and that even after all the bad press they got it mainly because of the Chinese government not agreeing with the show.
Chinese Spectacular show us a various view of different little stories from the Chinese culture and for me as non Chinese it was a new way of looking at this. I heard from Chinese friends that saw the show that it contains some strong propaganda to but that was not for me to understand.
The show is build around small performances that are not directly connected to each other but the dance and singing acts are talked together by a nice presenting duo and are done in Chinese and English.
It is a great experience and the brightly colored costumes are a pearl on the eye. The show is worth a visit and people please stay after intermission to! In the show that we visited lots of chairs became empty after intermission but maybe it was just because the show takes a lot of time we where there for more the 3 hours and they where worth it.
If you have a changes to go see the Chinese Spectacular show i would say do it, it is worth to experience the Chinese culture a bit better.

Yesterday was the day for the free concert on Olympic Plaza in Calgary all to start of the Juno days.
I went to see the last band of the day Finger Eleven
Calgary did a great job arranging this concert. The atmosphere down town was great and lots of people showed up and enjoyed the music. It was nice to see that people just accepted each other with out any problem and it was specially nice to see that even the homeless seem to enjoy the Concert.
Finger Eleven
did a great job entertaining the crowed and the 45 minutes that they where on stage where a great way to enjoy an nice evening outside. The band did a great job trying to involve the crowds in there music. I guess that the Finger Eleven
people really seem to enjoy them selves on stage and they are a couple of strange characters
I guess the lead singer needs to work a bit on his jokes but besides that they really got the party going.
All said and done I think that Calgary did a great job getting this party going downtown. There where lots of police, ems and so on available but everything was calm and i think even they had a great time enjoying the concert.
Public transport also seem to have done a great job because the LRT was not overcrowded even just after the concert.
I have to say Good job hope we can do this again someday!

I happened to visit the Whyte museum in Banff last month. It was my first time, and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised.
The entrance fee was 7$, which I thought in retrospect was a bit steep for the size of the museum and the few displays.
The first exhibition was called “God Rush” the imaginary Klondike. These were a large collections of photogaphs by Craig Richards, Aldo Audisio, the director of the Museo Nazionale Della Montagna and Toni Cembran, an Italian journalist; of the Klondike gold rush of 1897 and 1898. They captured photographs of the Klondike trail in 2005 in its current state reviving nostalgia and historical research of an important event in time.
The second exhibition called “Through the Lens” was an endearing collection of photographs taken by kids both from high schools in Calgary, as well as children from the Basau pygmy villages bordering Uganda and Congo. Its was interesting to see the striking differences between the more posed and materialistic shift in the Western kids, compared to the pics taken by the kids in Africa.
The third exhibition is “Peter and Catharine Whyte” their story. This was a room full of the life and things that surrounded this couple, after whom the museum is named.
The “Realidoscope” by Barbara Amos, was on display. She used this to observe the world in a differnt way, and took pictures of the mosiaced image she witnessed.
Lastly, this was one of the nicest exhibitions called “Everest ‘82, the first Canadian expedition”. It included pictures taken by Pat Morrow, whom accompanied Laurie Skreslet, the first Canadian to have climbed to the top of mount Everest. He captured the spirit, hardship, horror, and courage displayed by all present on that trip.
Recently, the Calgary Herald (Neighbours free newspaper, feb 28, 2008) ran a two page article on the Whyte museum, focussing on “Through the Lens” with many of the photographs from the exhibition printed.
Although Banff has tonnes of other things to keep one occupied, I highly recommend visiting this museum.

This year like every year around Christmas the Calgary Zoo has Zoolights.
Zoo lights doesn’t show you any real animals but the zoo is decorated with all kind of cool lights in all kinds of shapes. You can see all kind of animals move around but now all made out of Christmas lights.
Next to a lot of Christmas lights there is more of course. For the kids the are all kind of games like building an Igloo or bowling snow mans and lots more to entertain the kids.
All over the zoo you will find fires to keep you warm if you get called and there are people singing.
But there is more this year your kids can talk to Santa live from the North pole and they can see him on a HUGE TV.
So if you are looking for something nice to do one of these evenings then think of a visit to ZOOLights at the Calgary Zoo.

Lake Minnewanka is the biggest Lake in the Banff National Park, OK it is not all natural but still the biggest.
The Tour guide on the boat will tell you about the lake and the dam and of course about the nature, history, geology and animals. And they will help you look for the imprints of people and animals in the mountains.
We took the last boat last saturday a beautiful sunny day and a perfect day for a tour on the lake. Our guide was very well informed and kinda funny
Our guide was interested in everybody on board an very friendly and helpful. For about half of the tour he would tell his story about what we see and about the lake. The other part of the trip he would walk by to answer peoples questions.
The Tour on Lake Minnewanka shows you great scenery and if you are lucky (we where not) you may even see some wildlife. The tour takes more then an hour (i believe close to 1.5hour) and that will really give you a great experience and a nice way to enjoy the national park.
If you get to Banff on a nice an sunny day think about a ride on the boat it is worth it!
Boats are going between May and October but check with the boat company for times.

We all know about Terry Fox and his Marathon of hope but did you know about the Terry Fox Monument in Thunder Bay?
The Terry Fox Monument is a giant copper statue of Terry running his Marathon. The Monument is build close to the place where Terry needed to stop his Marathon on after 143 days of running and even with only one real leg he still ran a marathon distance a day!
So to honer this great runner they build this monument next to Highway 11/17 and gave Terry a beautiful view over the Sleeping Giant.
The Monument of Terry fox is build in a small but nice park where you can have a rest stop on your trip and bring a visit to see Terry. At the parking lot you also find a Tourist information office for Thunder Bay with lots of information on Terry Fox and his Marathon of Hope.
And as all Canadians should know every year the Terry Fox Foundation has runs and walks to support the Cancer Research. In 2007 the run will be held on September 16 and my advice if you can go support this good cause and if you can’t run yourself then think about supporting one of us and that way we all help to get more funds for the Cancer Research. Just click on the banner below for your support!

And when you have a changes in going to visit The Terry Fox Monument then do so just give it a quick visit and learn more about Terry and his Marathon of hope.

This year for the 20th time there is Shakespeare in the Park. until August 25th you can see a Shakespeare performance everyday (except Sunday) at Prince’s Island Park.
On a nice summer day what is nicer then enjoy the outdoors so a visit to Shakespeare in the park is a nice thing you could do in Calgary. Entrance is Free and all performances start at 7 PM.
For this year they performer “Macbeth” and “As you like it” and that means that there are two changes to see some Shakespeare in the park.
The performance are at a stage in Prince’s Island Park and you can sit on the grass to enjoy the play. The Performance doesn’t have any microphones and stuff so that makes it some times difficult to understand the auteurs specially if there are also some kids screaming.
So my advice to you is if you go make sure your are on time and look for a nice spot in front so that you can hear everything.
Shakespeare in the Park is definitely a nice way to spend and evening out and Prince’s Island Park is a great venue for a performance like this.
Check out their WEBSITE for more info about the play

Bowness Park is one of the many nice parks in Calgary. But in Bowness park there is also a Mini Golf track to play on.
The mini Golf is run by the Parkside Cafe and that is where you get you ticket for the mini Golf. The Course is 18 holes and they are secluded in between lots of trees so on a hot an sunny day it will give you enough shade to cool of under.
Mini Golf in Bowness Park is not very difficult it is a pretty easy course but still lots of fun to play on. At this point i think it could get some maintenance to make it look a little bit better. But still it is lost of fun to play a quick round of mini Golf in Bowness park.
So if after a nice walk through the park you feel like some other entertainment try the Mini Golf it will keep you busy for a bit.

Last Saturday we went to see Mamma Mia the musical in the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium in Calgary.
The musical Mama Mia is based on the music from Abba. The musical is based on the story about a girl that is getting married in a couple of days but doesn’t know who her father is. But to find out she read her mothers diary and found 3 guys in there that could be her dad and she decided to invite them all to the wedding in the hope that she will find out which one is her dad so that he can walk here down the isle.
As you can imagine this will lead to all kinds of hilarious situations but i can’t tell you everything of course
The whole story they will use the famous Abba songs to tell parts of the story and i have to admit this works really nice. I am NOT an Abba fan actually i am the opposite but still this was done really nice and i would say even if you don’t like Abba this is a great musical to go see.
It is done real nice and they keep you in to the story all the way till the end.
And if you have already seen Mamma Mia then you might want to know that the Mamma Mia Soundtrack
is available on CD.
