Big Rock, a.k.a. the Okotoks Erratic

Rhe Erratic in Okotoks, Alberta: A really BIG rock

Want to see a BIG rock? If you’re in the Calgary area go look for this one. It is BIG and it is special. The Okotoks Erratic was deposited by a glacier during the last Ice Age and now stands in the middle of a field near the town of Okotoks south of Calgary.

Big Rock is not a place where you will hang out for hours but it is still very interesting. It is next to Highway 7 going west from Okotoks (coordinates 50.70603894905414 and -114.07655954360962).

The area around Big Rock could be nice for a drive. We drove down from Calgary through Okotoks and then back to Calgary on Highway 22 through Bragg Creek - good for a short road trip.

Notice from the photo that the Rock is in two pieces. Here’s the story behind it, copied from the informational sign on-site ;):

The Rock That Ran

One hot summer day, Napi - the supernatural Trickster of the Blackfoot - sat upon the Rock to rest. Because it was so hot, Napi threw his robe over the Rock, saying, “Here, I give you my robe, because you are poor and have let me rest on you. Keep it always.” Napi walked on, and it began to rain. Napi got angry, and took “his” robe. As he walked away, he heard a loud noise - the Rock was chasing him!

Napi was scared and ran. His friends - the buffalo, the deer, and the antelope - tried to stop the Rock, but were crushed. Nearly exhausted, Napi called upon some bats to help. The bats dove at the Rock and one hit it in the middle and split it in two.

This Blackfoot legend reveals not only how the Rock was split but also why bats have “squashed” faces. And the moral of the story is: Don’t take back what you’ve given!

Have a look at “the rock that ran” if you’re travelling near Okotoks. It is not a major attraction but still worth a quick visit.

Royal Tyrrell Museum, Drumheller, Alberta

Royal Tyrrell Museum, Drumheller, Alberta

If you are the slightest bit fascinated by dinosaurs, you have to visit the town of Drumheller in southern Alberta.

The town’s first claim to fame is the world’s largest dinosaur. It lives outdoors and you can climb up for a view from the mouth. :)

Its second claim to fame is the Royal Tyrrell Museum, where you can admire many large and small dinosaurs on exhibit.

Drumheller was apparently a dinosaur hotspot when they still roamed the Earth. It’s one of the few places that are truly rich in dinosaur fossils. If you’re lucky, you might spot one yourself, but you wouldn’t be allowed to take it home. :( The area’s geological past makes the Royal Tyrrell Museum an ideal place to house some of the world’s best dinosaurs displays.

The Royal Tyrrell Museum is situated just a couple of kilometers outside Drumheller, in the middle of the Alberta badlands. It is a big facility and will keep you and your family occupied for hours. The exhibits depict what the dinosaurs looked like and how their ancient habitat evolved over millions of years. In addition to dozens of impressive dinosaur replicas, there were many interactive stations and even a large viewing window into the actual Preparation Lab where scientists and museum staff do their work (the Saturday of our visit appeared to be a day-off :( ).

When you are done exploring indoors, you can hit the walking trails in the surrounding badlands and learn more about how the area came to look as it does today.

The Royal Tyrrell Museum is definitely a must-see if you find yourself in southern Alberta. If you have more time, make a stop to see the hoodoos in nearby Horseshoe Canyon (off Highway 9).

For more information, check out the Royal Tyrrell Museum Web site at http://www.tyrrellmuseum.com. Note that the museum is closed on Mondays in winter and spring.

The Eau Claire Market Cineplex Odeon

Cineplex odion in Eau Claire Market Calgary

We went to see a Movie in the movie Theater in Eau Claire Market in Calgary. It is situated in Downtown Calgary and still has good and affordable parking.

And the Eau Claire Theater is the cheapest in Calgary.

This Cineplex Movie Theater is a smaller then most of the other theaters in town it only has 6 theaters and they are a bit smaller to.

The nice thing is that it is downtown.

The downside of this theater is the smaller setting and this means less leg room :( and another bad thing we found where the cup holders, they are place on an angel on the chair in front of you. So i you are unlucky (like us) you drink will start leaking out before you can even start drinking it.

And then I have to say that i was VERY disappointed with the food sales. first of all they don’t have much and second and more importantly the personal is not very useful.

I was helped by a young lady called “Thiera” and she was so busy talking to her co workers that she forgot half of our order. So my advise to you Thierra is focus on one thing at a time, you can focus on your coworker or your customer but not really two at a time.

Conclusion:

The Eau Claire Market Cineplex Odeon movie theater is nice and in downtown Calgary. It is not my first choice of theaters in Calgary but still nice enough to go for a quick movie. My advise bring you own drink and food it will be a lot cheaper and the service will be better to ;)
