The diving bell and the butterfly

200px-divingbellbutterflymp

I saw this movie first, and then read the book. I found both equally good.

It is a memoir by Jean-Do Bauby, the editor-in chief of Elle magazine who suffers a cerebralvascular accident (stroke) which leaves him completely paralyzed, with the exception of his left eye and some movement of his head. He uses his left eye to blink correct alphabets taught to him by his speech therapist, and manages to “write” this book and live his daily life with the help of  those at the instutution where he is kept, and his friends and family. Its a touching story, and yet an inspiring one of a man whom despite his physically “locked-in” syndrome will not allow his spirit to be trapped as well. While his body is trapped in this diving bell, his mind, humor, wit and imagination soar like that of a butterfly and go where ever it pleases.

It is a reminder to all of us whom suffer from the everyday ‘locked-in” syndrom of our minds, where we allow ourselves to become trapped in a diving bell when instead we can flit around anywhere we please like a butterfly.  A good read, and a good movie to watch.

The Bear’s Embrace, by Patricia van Tighem

In this book Patricia van Tighem writes her story about the attack on her and her husband by a grizzly bear protecting his food in Waterton National Park in 1983.

This National bestselling book tells the story from the attack of the bear to everything that happens after. The hospital visits, the operations and more importantly the mental stage Patricia was in.

If you expect a book just about the Bear and what happens then you will get disappointed. This book is tells the story about a survivor and everything that happens.

Patricia van Tighem did not have the best of times after the attack things like infections and reconstructive surgery where mayor things in this book but also the metal problems and her depresions and what that did to her family of 4 children.

The Bear’s embrace is a interesting book to read and it will give you a different view of how survivors of things like this feel after it happend. I would say put it on your list of books to read.

And as a final note Patricia died at the age of 47 after an attempted of suicide on December 14, 2005.

The Mermaid of Banff by Jan Mark

The Mermaid of banff. When I got this book I was interested by the title and based on the cover I thought it was a kids book. You can’t be to picky at a garage sale so I got it.

It is not a kids book and the Mermaid of Banff is only a tiny part of this book.

Jan Mark writes in this book about a coast to coast trip she makes in Canada she skips a big part in the middle and the whole top of Canada but besides that she writes about Canada. For me not originally from Canada I have to say I learned a lot from this book it told me a lot about the history of the country. It also told me about places in Canada I didn’t visit yet but now are on my to visit list.

The Mermaid of Banff is a great book to read it reads easy and quickly and keeps you busy. Try to find a copy and if you can’t find one you can write me I am willing to sell my for what i payed for it.

The Sweet-Shop Owner, by Grahm Swift

After reading the cover of this book I got intrigued by the idea to read about one day as a Sweet Shop owner and decided to give it a go. And let me tell you this after reading the cover I got kinda disappointed.

The book is not really about just one day but more about his whole life from starting the store, his wedding, the war, his kid and so on.

But it is an intriguing book that even after I put it away lots of times always pulled me back and I even finished it without getting the real punchline of the book.

So is The Sweet-Shop Owner a good book? I don’t think so but it offers some nice parts that make up for the many bad once. I would not recommend the book but when you are low on books to read then just give it a go and let me know what you though of it.

SNow Falling on Cedars, byDavid Guterson

Snow Falling on Cedars is a novel by David Guterson. This book for me is strange and it jumps around from a court case to events that happend in the lives of some of the characters in the book.

There is a lot of strawberries, fish, fhishing, farming, war and Japanese in this book and all makes a little bit more sence after reading it but still I think if i could travel back in time i would skip this book from my list of books to read.

It is not bad but there are a lot of books out there with a much better story to tell.

Alaska by Frank Lauria

Alaska a story about two kids on the path to saving their dad from a plane crash on devils thumb

The book Alaska is a Novel written by Frank Lauria but based on the movie Alaska yes you read that right the book is based on a motion picture movie.

Alaska is all about two kids that moved with there dad from Chicago where he was a Boeing 747 pilot to a small town in  Alaska to be a bush pilot. The daughter (Jessie) has a great time in the new surroundings but her brother (Sean) can’t really settle in this new  surrounding.

But then one day in bad weather the plane from there dad disappears in a storm. After a search and rescue didn’t find anything the authorities give up on the search. And you guessed it already the kids go on there search for there dad.

All in all a nice story that would offer some nice twists but unfortunately it doesn’t seem to hold the same excitement as the movie did for me. Maybe the kids would like a book like this and find out what happens to the Polar Bear (see picture)

I would say if you liked the movie then stay away from  the book but if you didn’t see the movie then why no read it and then see the movie ;)

Brave New World, by Aldous Huxley

Brave new world a story about the future by aldous huxley

Lets start this little book review with saying that I hope that this book never comes true.

Brave New World is a famous that got lots of opinions of lots of people there are even books written just to talk about what this book really is about.

Brave New World is all about what could happen if we would let our industrialization and research run our world.

The story is about a world build around people that are created by tubes instead of by love between people, a world created by people that never had parents but where trained to be perfect in the one thing they where designed for.

And the people believe in a God that is called Ford and he is almighty. And then there is something called Mosa basically a pill that makes you feel good and the population of the world all enjoy there highs from Mosa that to me basically is a drug to keep people in check.

The story build around a few people and how they live there strange lives and have fun with new people everyday.

And then two of them go on a holiday to a place where there are still people living that are not part of this new world and one of them comes back to the Brave New World with them as kind of an experiment.

I have to say that I expected more from Brave New World but maybe it is just not to strong any more because lots of the things happening in this book could be real if we wanted them to happen like this.

But it still is an interesting read and worth your time and effort.

The Time Traveler’s Wife, by Audrey Niffenegger

The time travelers wife a novel by audrey niffenegger

Audrey Niffenegger did a great job with this novel. The Time Traveler’s Wife is a novel that brings you to parts of you imagination that you don’t even know you have.

The book The Time Traveler’s Wife is all about Henry a guy who works at the Newberry Library in Chicago and he is a bit strange because he disappears once in a while and then he appears somewhere else in a different time. Yes Henry travels in time but unfortunately for him he can’t really control when and where this travels bring him.

Clare is someone that Henry meets on his travels in time and eventually they meet in real time.

And those two Clare and Henry make this book to an intriguing story it is fascinating to follow all the stories that develop and try to keep up because a lot will happen in the hundreds and hundreds of page of this great piece of art.

Not like one would expect The Time Traveler’s Wife is a story about relationships and not really about the travel up and down in time. So don’t expect Henry to show up in a war or around dinosaurs because he will not, and that is a good thing.

The Time Traveler’s Wife is one of those novels that you should read and be warned it is hard to put it aside!

Check out Amazon for a new or used copy of The Time Traveler’s Wife or borrow a copy at your library you will not get disappointed.

Little House on the Prairie, by Laura Ingalls Wilder

Little House on the prairie by laura wilder

Little house on the prairie is one of those books you just need to read. OK it is a children’s book but still if you are a grownup and didn’t read it yet do so it is more then worth it.

The story about little house on the prairie is about a family that moves from there home out back in to the wild to find a place to build a new home that is not so busy as where they lived before. After a long drive they find a new spot where dad will build them a new log cabin.

And of course lots of things happen when they are living there. There are incounters with indians and wolfs. and of course there is lots and lots more.

The nice thing of this book is also that it shows us that even with the simplest things we can have a meaningful live.

My version of the little house on the prairie had great drawings in it by Garth Williams that made the story so much better then it already was.

One last word of advice see if you can get a copy and read it for your self and share it with kids and other adults.

Look at the library for you copy or order of Little House on the Prairie
