I was in the movie theater the other day, and what I thought was a trailer for a scary movie started up, it turned out it was a commercial for something simple- saving water when brushing your teeth.

People (me included) often leave the tap running when brushing their teeth, many thoughts seems to justify this behvior (i wont be brushing that long, the sink can get clean in the meantime, the water will be the right temperature when I am finished, etc. etc..). There is NO reason not to TURN OFF the tap when brushing. The amount of water this simple excercise would save is unsurmountable. Since all of this wasted water is drinking water, it would probably be enough to quench several thirsty people on a hot day of drought. Think about it, the same goes for wasting water in the shower, and flushing toilets too much. Read more about low flow shower heads, and low flush toilets. In Europe, its possible to buy toilets with a half and full flush system which saves water.

With winter knocking on our doors i thought it was time to see if i could do some extra insulation.

My office where i type my little stories it gets pretty cold and because i don’t want to put the heating higher just for one room i decided to give a window film a try.

A window film is basically a piece of plastic that you secure with double sided tape to keep it in place. The Kit i got comes with two pieces of film (64″ x 42″) so enough for two windows. First you apply the tape and on that you stick the plastic with a couple of cm overhang. Then when that is secure you get the hairdryer out and start attacking the creases if you do this slowly and from side to side you really see them disappear and after a couple of minutes you get a fairly smooth surface and you can hardly see that there is a film in front of the window. And because there is air between your window and the foil your room should get warmer and that means you will save energy to heat it.

My first impression is that it feels warmer and it looks great. I didn’t get all the surface as smooth as glass but it takes a trained eye to notice that the film is there.

I would say give this product a try if you want an simple and easy way insulate your window.

With temperatures going to -20c or lower you probably want to start using you block heater. I try to find out as much as i could and my conclusion was that to use the block heater when temperatures go to -20 or lower. And you don’t have to use the block heater all night 2 to 4 hours before you leave is more then enough to keep you engine going.

And one other thing with modern injection engines it doesn’t make a difference to start the engine way before you leave. 30 seconds is more then enough. The engine will get the rest of it warming from driving. And this will definitely save you some gas

You know that you can save a lot of water if you would install a rain barrel? Now you can use your rain water for your garden. Your plants like it better to because this doesn’t have all the chemicals in it that the water from the tap has.

Just connect a Rain barrel to the downspout and it will fill itself with each drop of rain.

Make sure do that you cover the top so and the sprout so that insect will not start using you barrel for there reproduction. You can just get a a fabric like we use to keep the insect out of the house and just put it over the top.

And before the real winter starts make sure to empty out your Rain Barrel because you don’t want it to brake because of the frost.

But why do we keep our engines running when we are waiting in line at the car wash? If there is 4 cars in front of you do you really think you need to be able to start driving right away?

Just stop the engine and start it again when the line moves it will save you some fuel and you don’t dump all those fumes in the air.

Today Honda unveiled there new Formula 1 car for the 2007 season.

The most noticeable thing was that there is no advertisement on it. It just looks like the earth.  Through the website www.myearthdream.com it will be possible to buy pixels on this car to help the environment. So if you want to help this world maybe have a look.

And if even big companies like Honda start to see that the environment is important then maybe you should do the same

 Don’t we have those things to close them? And do you know that if you close them at night you will save a lot of heat?

 Think about it and maybe this is a way for you to save some of our natural resources.

Your car will not cool down that much in the 5 / 10 minutes you are standing there. And by turning you engine of you save a lot of that expensive fuel you are complaining about and you also keep the air around you a little bit cleaner.
